The Makings of a Good Wife

What makes a good wife? I will be honest, I have been struggling with this one lately. My problem has been finding balance and routine with an infant. I only have one...I can't imagine what you go through if you have more than one! And putting our spouse first (under God) is essential to a successful and happy marriage. I know this...but can I whine a little...It's hard!!

But God didn't say it would be easy. That it would be all "smooth sailing" in this life. And of course we have heard anything worth having is going to take hard work.

So what is the biblical definition of a good wife? In the devotional Wife After God, she focuses on several bible verses but we will camp at Proverbs 31:11-31. This woman is the perfect example of a good wife.

Let's break this down together.

The makings of a good wife based on the Proverbs 31 woman:

1) Her husband trusts her (v.11)
2) She provides him with good (v 12)
3) She works with her hands (v 13)
4} She provides food (14)
5) She keeps up with the finances\budgets (16)
6) She takes care of herself...maybe works out? (17)
7)She makes time to give to others (20)
8) She provides clothes for her family (21)
9) She doesn't fear the future (25)
10) She is wise and disciplined (26)
11) She knows what is going on in her house (27)
12) She is praised by her children and husband (29)
13) She fears the Lord (30)

Are you inspired or intimidated?  I am a little of both. But I want to be like her. I want to be the kind of wife that my husband will praise. So how can I take this and apply it to me to make me a better wife?

Where am I right now in my marriage? I am a stay at home mom with a 9 month old infant. I love staying at home, but I have to admit I get overwhelmed with the housework and trying to balance being a wife, mom, and homemaker. Something that helps me is this verse:

When I feel overwhelmed, I recall this verse to memory and remember that I am working for the Lord; I am doing this for Him. And it's ok if everything doesn't get done in the same day. But at least I did my best.

My challenge to myself is to work on each of these virtues one at a time to make myself a better wife. Because I can always use improvement.

My first challenge to work on: To take care of myself

Today's challenge: To pick one of these virtues you maybe struggling with and work at how you can make it better.

Question to Ponder:

What motivates you to do good for your husband?

Where do you struggle to do good for him?

Until next time, have a great day!
